When a player looks to fill it means they are making a cut or flash into open space on the court. Examples of this are a player in the paint "filling out" to occupy an open space on the perimeter or a player filling to replace as in the image below.

In this diagram, a player being covered makes a backdoor cut to the basket. O3 and O1 fill towards the basketball so O2 can replace out to the weak side corner.
